The United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) was a private relief agency created by federal legislation on June 18, 1861, to support sick and wounded soldiers of the United States Army (Federal / Northern / Union Army) during the American Civil War. Lewis Steiner (1827-1892) was born in Frederick, MD. He received his M.D. degree in 1849. From 1852 to 1860 Steiner taught chemistry at George Washington University. He was chief inspector of the United States Sanitary Commission in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and served as president of the American Academy of Medicine in 1877.
